The Guide: Houndstooth
What Is Houndstooth?
As far as fabric names go, houndstooth is one of boldest. What it refers to is a pattern of repeating, abstract shapes with four distinct points that almost resemble… a hound’s tooth. Like many great patterns it comes from Scotland, and it’s been in use for over 2,000 years.
Traditional houndstooth patterns are often large and black-and-white, but it’s become common to see it on a smaller scale in rich, brown shades. Sometimes it’s overlaid with a windowpane pattern, and it appears as a panel in the glen plaid pattern.
How Can You Wear It?
Larger houndstooth patterns are more casual. Houndstooth patterns that are shrunken down so that they are most visible up-close are less casual, though they will never be as formal as dark, solid suits. However, the pattern is a great compliment to solid trousers, chinos or even jeans, and full houndstooth suits can easily be broken apart and paired with other clothing.
