Pairing Ties and Suits with Deeply Colored Shirts

Dyes in deep, saturated colors can create shirts that are just generally more interesting. However, “more interesting” also means that they may not be as versatile as your vanilla white and blue shirts. But keep a couple easy rules in mind, and you’ll be pairing them like a pro:

Suits: Even if the shades are darker, the vibrancy of deeply colored shirts gives them a warm, bright quality. Balance that out by pairing them with suits in cool, light colors, like mid-grey.

Ties: You don’t want to double-down on darkness by pairing a dark tie with a deeply colored shirt. Find a shade that is lighter and brighter. A pattern will add even more contrast to the get-up: a bright tie in a microdot design is a great choice.

Pocket squares: A simple white pocket square will offer a strong contrast to any deeply colored shirt. For extra points, select a white pocket square with colored trim that matches the shirt.

Chinos and Khakis: The pop of color that deeply colored shirts provide make them a great choice for casual wear, too. Balance out that pop of color with pants in dusky, earthy tones like khaki.

Deeply colored shirts should be cared for the same way as your other shirts: machine wash cold and hang dry. That way you’ll preserve their unique color saturation.
